WORKFORCE AND THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

The workforce and the work environment have topped decision makers' concerns in all Listening for Direction consultations. Key issues include staffing shortages, healthy workplaces, new models of interprofessional collaboration, and expanded skills and responsibilities for healthcare workers.
Our research and knowledge exchange activities are focused on three main areas: the impacts of healthy workplaces; factors that support positive changes in the workforce and work environment; and effective strategies for interprofessional collaboration and teamwork in healthcare delivery.

Some questions we're asking:

  1. What are the impacts of healthy workplaces on the health of the workforce? Is there evidence to suggest that there are subsequent impacts on service delivery, patient outcomes, quality, safety, productivity and cost?
  2. What kinds of changes in the work environment have jurisdictions made?
  3. What approaches have been shown to be effective in achieving integration of new kinds of workers – professional, paraprofessional and non-professional – into healthcare teams?
