Health Services Research Advancement Award
Since 2000, the Foundation has accepted public nominations for our Health Services Research Advancement Award. This award is aimed at any individual, team, or organization that has contributed significantly to the advancement of the health services research community in Canada.
Winners receive:
- a certificate and $10,000 for use in the advancement of health services research in a way designated by the winner.
Who is eligible for this award
- Individuals, teams, or organizations that have either made contributions over many years to the health services research community or a single major contribution with ongoing relevance are eligible.
- Contributions may be as a decision maker, a funding source, a researcher, a methodologist, a communicator, an educator, an author, a champion, or other role as deemed appropriate by the selection committee.
- Individuals in an organization that has previously won are not eligible until five years of the organization’s winning the award has elapsed.
- Employees and trustees of the Foundation are not eligible for this award.
- Nominees must be currently active in the health services research field (to be able to use the $10,000 award in a way that would advance the field).
- All applicants must adhere to the Foundation’s conflict of interest policy.
The nomination process:
To nominate, the following must be submitted:
- the name, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the nominator(s) and the nominee (if the nominator is an organization, a contact name within the organization must be provided);
- a maximum of 500 words providing the reason why you are nominating the individual/group, identifying the nominee’s stature and the nature of his/her main contributions to infrastructure development (people, institutions, processes), leadership/championing, influence/impact, and innovation; and
- other pertinent information (to a maximum of 10 additional pages) that may assist the selection panel (such as references to articles and other publications the nominee has written, abridged CVs which include activities relevant to the nomination, etc.).

Nominations must be received at the Foundation no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon) eastern standard time on March 13, 2008.
A short list of nominees will be selected by a panel of health services researchers and decision makers. The short-listed nominees will then be contacted by the Foundation and will be asked to provide additional information as requested by the panel.
Selection criteria:
The review panel for this award will assess nominees against the following criteria:
- Infrastructure development - people (receptor capacity; developing knowledge brokers; developing communicators/liaison function)
- Infrastructure development - institutions (think-tanks; creation of positions; development of interchange opportunities)
- Infrastructure development - processes (policy forums; people/communication networks)
- Leadership/championing (role model; networking and dissemination; communications - speaking, writing)
- Influence/impact (people listening and changing practice/behaviours; beyond a region/local area and beyond personal commitment; sustained or sustainable)
- Stature (length of time in the field; present “activity” of the individual/team; recognized quality of research, management, decision-making, or other related activities)
- Innovation (new knowledge development and/or application; framing and implementing new perspectives; developing and supporting new applications)
