This group of training and personnel awards programs represents the second major area of strategic importance to the Foundation and the applied health services and policy research community. Four programs are listed within this category. Joint Training Awards and Development Funds are no longer open for new applications.
The Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA) program develops capacity and leadership to optimize the use of research evidence in managing Canadian healthcare organizations.
The CADRE Program(Capacity for Applied and Developmental Research and Evaluation in health services and nursing) — This program addresses short-term and long-term capacity building for applied health services and policy research across Canada through the following initiatives:
Harkness Associates — Through an agreement with the Commonwealth Fund, the Foundation selects two people per year to participate As Associates in the five main activities conducted for the Harkness Fellows in the U.S. and Canada. This program has a policy focus that is designed to expand the knowledge and the networks of those participating.
The Health Services Research Advancement Award is aimed at any individual, team or organization that has contributed significantly to the advancement of the health services research community in Canada.
Joint Training Awards — These awards were an interim measure created in 1999 in partnership with national and provincial funding agencies. They were designed to quickly address the immediate need for applied health policy, health systems and nursing researchers in Canada. Beginning in 2001, these are no longer offered because graduate student support now falls under the Regional Training Centres.
Development Funds — For 1999 only, the Foundation implemented one-time grants aimed at preparing health services and nursing researchers to participate in applied health services research, to inform Canadian Institutes of Health Research transition planning and to develop curricula and communications infrastructure for applied health services and policy research.
