The Health Services Research Advancement Award (HSRA Award) recognizes any individual, team or organization that has contributed significantly to the advancement of health services research in Canada.
Since 2000, the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) has accepted public nominations for the HSRA Award and awarded it to renowned individuals from across the country. (See the list of previous winners.)
The 2010 HSRA Award
The winner will receive:
- A certificate and $15,000 for use in the advancement of health services research in a way designated by the recipient;
- Travel, accommodations and registration to the 2010 CAHSPR conference in Toronto to receive the award; and
- Opportunities to attend and give presentation(s) about their health services research contribution at future CHSRF-led conference(s).
Who is eligible for this award
- Individuals, teams, or organizations that have significantly contributed to the field of health services research in Canada are eligible.
- Contributions may be as a researcher or funder or champion or related role in the fields of health services research, as deemed appropriate by the selection committee.
- Nominees must be currently active in the health services research field (to be able to use the $15,000 award in a way that would advance the field).
- Individuals in an organization that has previously won are not eligible until five years after the date that the organization won the award.
- Employees and trustees of CHSRF are not eligible.
All nominators and nominees must adhere to CHSRF’s conflict of interest policy.
The nomination process
The nomination form must be requested online. Nominators must submit a completed nomination form that includes the following information:
- Full contact information for the nominator(s) and the nominee(s);
- A maximum of 500 words outlining your reasons for nominating the individual/group, identifying the stature and the nature of the nominee’s contributions to the advancement of health services research including leadership/championing, influence/impact and innovation; and
- Other pertinent information (to a maximum of 10 additional pages) that may assist the selection panel – for example, references to articles and other publications the nominee has written; letters of support; abridged résumé(s) that include activities relevant to the nomination.
Nomination submission
The completed nomination form (with signature) and all attachments must be received no later than March 17, 2010 at 12 p.m. (noon) Eastern Standard Time.

Selection process
All nominations will be screened by CHSRF staff for consistency with the eligibility requirements of the competition as outlined above. Eligible nominations will be reviewed by a merit review panel composed of health services researchers and decision makers, and a short list of nominees will be selected. The short-listed nominees will be contacted by CHSRF and asked to provide additional information as requested by the panel.
Selection criteria
The merit review panel for this award will assess nominees against the following criteria:
- Advancement of health services research/innovation: examples of new knowledge developments by the nominee(s); illustrations of the nominee’s development and support for new applications of existing knowledge; examples of the nominee’s experience with framing and implementing new perspectives
- Leadership/championing: examples of how the nominee has acted as a role model; networking and dissemination activities; mentoring; communication abilities such as speaking and/or writing
- Stature: length of time the nominee has been involved in the health services research field; description of the nominee’s present activity in the field; examples that show recognition of the nominee’s quality of research, management, decision-making, or other related activities
- Influence/impact: illustrations of how the nominee has changed practice and behaviours; cases where this influence/impact has gone beyond a regional or local area and beyond the nominee’s personal commitment; illustration that the influence/impact has been sustained or is sustainable
- Capacity-building and infrastructure development with a focus on research
- People: examples of how the nominee has developed receptor capacity in others; developed knowledge brokers; developed the ability for others to serve as communicators/liaison function
- Institutions: examples of how the nominee has created networks within or among institutions; positions; developed interchange opportunities in their institutions and beyond
- Processes: examples of processes that the nominee has created/helped create to implement or share health services research; these may include policy forums and other knowledge exchange events
Presentation of award
The 2010 Health Services Research Advancement Award will be presented at the 2010 Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) Conference, May 10–13, 2010 in Toronto, Ontario.
