About Canadian Harkness Fellowships
The Harkness Fellowships Award enables talented Canadians to participate in the Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice, a core program of The Commonwealth Fund's International Program in Health Policy and Practice.
The NEW Canadian Harkness Fellowships: Starting in 2012–13
The Commonwealth Fund, in collaboration with the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, offers a unique opportunity for mid-career professionals—researchers, policy-makers, clinicians, managers and journalists—to spend 12 months in the United States to conduct a policy-oriented research study with leading U.S. health experts.
Benefits of this program include:
- Fellows are placed with U.S. mentors, who are experts in the policy areas to be studied, from highly reputable institutions (e.g. Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement)
- A peer-reviewed journal article or policy report for health ministers and other high-level policy audiences is the anticipated product of the fellowship. Harkness Fellows have had their findings published in leading journals.
- Harkness fellows have moved into senior positions within academia, government, and healthcare organizations and benefit from a strong international network.
The Harkness Fellowship awards up to US$107,000, which covers round-trip airfare to the United States, a living allowance, funds for project-related travel, research, and conferences, travel to attend The Commonwealth Fund program of fellowship seminars, health insurance, and U.S. and state taxes. A family supplement (e.g. approximately $50,000 for a partner and two children up to age 18) is also provided to cover airfare, living allowance, and health insurance.
